Police: Man arrested after video catches him running red light in stolen vehicle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - On Wednesday, police said they arrested a man suspected of stealing a vehicle and running a red light in Colorado Springs.

A few weeks ago, officers said a Colorado Springs resident received a citation in the mail for committing a traffic violation near Platte Avenue and Chelton Road.

The resident brought the citation into the Municipal Court, and informed authorities that their car was stolen the morning before the violation happened.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, officers were "able to confirm the vehicle was reported stolen and immediately pulled the “Photo Red Evidence Packet." The packet contained video and a photo of the suspect driving the stolen vehicle.

Police sent the evidence to detectives, and after a thorough investigation - officers were able to identify the suspect as James Whitmire.

Detectives met with Whitmire at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center, where he later admitted to committing the crime.

"The excellent investigations teamwork involved with this case, beginning with the citizen coming in to start the process, was critical to solving this crime and shows that leads can come from any source,” said CSPD Lieutenant C. Graves.

Whitmire has been arrested and charged with Felony Motor Vehicle Theft.

The stolen car was returned to its owners and the violation has since been dismissed.
