Police: Driver cited for DUI, passenger arrested for shooting gun in northeast Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Two people on a joyride Sunday morning found themselves in trouble after they were allegedly caught driving drunk and firing a weapon.

An El Paso County sheriff's deputy was in the area of 4300 Barnes Road just before 1 a.m. when he saw a passenger in a car shooting a gun in the air. The deputy pulled the vehicle over at Barnes and Oro Blanco and called Springs Police for assistance.

After officers assessed the scene, both passenger and driver were taken into custody. The passenger faces charges for shooting a firearm, while the driver was cited for DUI.

The two were identified as Silviano Smith and Jaime Gutierrez. Police did not identify who was the driver and who was the passenger.
