COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A man was caught red-handed behind the wheel of a stolen car late Wednesday night.
Police surrounded the car with their guns drawn while they tried to suss out what they were dealing with. The car had been spotted heading eastbound off of Platte Avenue with its lights off; when it was pulled over for the lack of lights, officers realized it was listed as stolen.
"Every time we stop someone in a stolen vehicle, we don’t know who we are dealing with, and we don’t know if they are armed or not armed. We don’t know if people are hiding in the vehicle or anything like that. We are always going to approach as safely as possible, which is why we have as many officers out here as we do," said CSPD Sgt. Ryan Tepley.
Five police cruisers could be seen at the scene, which Tepley said is standard.
"If it’s a high-risk stop, multiple vehicles can come to the area to make sure everything goes as safely as possible," he told 11 News.
Two people were detained without incident. Police later confirmed one of them, identified as Ryan Delaney, was arrested on charges of motor vehicle theft and DUI.
Police are now looking for the owner of the stolen car.
