I-70 drivers near Rifle had an unusual companion Monday night: a small plane.
The plane reportedly ran out of fuel and had to make an emergency landing outside Rifle. The pilot was able to make a smooth landing on the roadway without hitting any vehicles, and State Patrol said no injuries were reported.
One lane on I-70 was closed while State Patrol moved the plane off the interstate.
The incident is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
