COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A woman faces vehicular homicide charges after police say she hit a man with her car.
Police identified the victim on Thursday as 21-year-old Mitchal Holloway of Colorado Springs.
A police sergeant was approaching the intersection of Colorado Avenue and Cimino Drive around 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday when he saw what looked like a body lying in the roadway. After pulling over, he realized the person was still alive.
"When the sergeant stopped, [he] checked on the individual, who had traumatic injuries, which appeared to have been sustained from a motor vehicle," said Lt. Howard Black with the Colorado Springs Police Department.
A woman from a car parked across the street walked over the sergeant and told him she had hit the man with her car.
Holloway was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Based on the investigation, police believe the suspect was driving westbound on Colorado and crashed into the victim as he crossed the street. He was outside a crosswalk at the time of the crash.
A passenger in the woman's car was not hurt.
The driver has been identified as 21-year-old Destany Cardenas. Cardenas is suspected of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
Police say this is the sixth traffic fatality so far this year.
"We’re clearly on track to continue the pace of 2018, which is extremely troubling," Black said.
2018 holds the city record for most traffic fatalities in a single year.
