'New Columbia' could be name for DC if it wins statehood bid

WASHINGTON (KKTV) A statehood commission decided last week if Washington, D.C. wins a bid to become the 51st state it could be known as "New Columbia."

According to FOX5, voters approved that name during statehood talks in 1982.

Washington, D.C.'s mayor is leading a push to have D.C. become a state, which has also picked up endorsements from President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Whether D.C. would be called "New Columbia" or not, the city's possible new name is headed to voters this fall, the Washington Post reported.
