FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A motorcycle rider was killed after crashing into an elk on Highway 50 Thursday morning.

State Patrol says the rider was heading westbound around 5:20 a.m. when he hit the animal and was thrown from his bike. The driver of a pickup truck behind him was unable to swerve in time and ran over the motorcyclist.

The rider died at the scene and has since been identified as 52-year-old Nick Lucero of Pueblo West. State Patrol says Lucero was wearing a helmet.

The pickup driver was not hurt.

Highway 50 was closed at mile marker 295, just west of the Pueblo/Fremont county line, for about three hours. It reopened around 8:15 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation, but troopers say speeding and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. No charges have been filed.
