NINEWAH PROVINCE, Iraq (KKTV) - A Marine from southwestern Colorado was killed in combat over the weekend.
Gunnery Sgt. Scott Koppenhafer died during an operation with Iraqi troops to weed out remnants of ISIS, according to the U.S. Central Command. Iraqi security forces have recently launched several similar operations to expunge Islamic State from the northern part of Iraq, and Koppenhafer was reportedly accompanying them on the mission Saturday as an advisor. The Department of Defense says Koppenhafer was killed by enemy small-arms fire.
The 35-year-old was from Mancos, which is about 30 miles west of Durango. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
