MONARCH, Colo. (KKTV) - A soldier from Fort Carson was killed Saturday in a snowboarding accident at Monarch Ski Area.

The 23-year-old reportedly crashed into a tree on the Mirage run, an expert-rated run. He was found unresponsive; despite CPR efforts by ski patrollers, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was wearing a helmet.

The Chaffee County Sheriff's Office identified the deceased as Collin Zak, of Ohio.

The Mountain Post confirmed late Sunday night that Zak was one of their soldiers. He had reached the rank of sergeant during his five-year military career and was a member of the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team with the 4th Infantry Division.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those affected by this tragedy," Fort Carson said in a brief statement.

During Zak's career, he received two Army Accommodation Medals, among others.
