An ex-Fort Carson soldier has been found guilty in the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Joseph Kimsey, one of two men found guilty of killing 27-year-old Ashley Melnyczok, stood before a judge and jury Tuesday afternoon. Kimsey was found guilty of first-degree murder and robbery. Soon after Kimsey was sentenced to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Kimsey and Jonathon Nelson stabbed Melnyczok to death while she had a bag over her head in her home at the Grand River Canyon Apartments.

Nelson was also sentenced to life.

According to court documents, Kimsey and Nelson became friends in jail shortly before the incident and plotted to burglarize Melnyczok's apartment.

Kimsey reportedly had an on-again, off-again relationship with the victim.
