Man arrested for arson and reportedly attacking a Colorado Springs police officer
A man is facing a number of charges including arson and assault on a peace officer in Colorado Springs.
Police were called to the Acacia Senior Center in downtown Colorado Springs at 104 E. Platte Ave. at about 2:49 p.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters were at the center on the report of an intentional fire set there. Witnesses were able to describe the suspect. who reportedly went into a nearby Carle Junior at 306 N. Nevada Ave. The fast-food restaurant is less than a block away from the senior center.
Police tried to make contact with the suspect when he tried running.
"The suspect attempted to flee upon contact with officers and a struggle ensued," police wrote on the City's crime blotter. "During the struggle, the suspect struck one of the officers and a Taser was deployed to subdue the suspect."
Javier Abeyta, 41, was arrested for arson, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.
Thankfully the damage to the senior center was minor and no other injuries were reported.
