Man gets life in prison for 3-year-old's murder in Colorado Springs
A man was found guilty of killing a 3-year-old girl in Colorado Springs.
The conviction came on Tuesday following a trial.
David Lake was
, more than six months after the little girl was found unresponsive at a southeast Springs home. Police say Bella died from blunt-force trauma.
Lake reportedly told a friend that she hit her head, and then a kid at her school pushed her into a bench a few days later. But according to the arrest affidavit, a doctor said the injury that ended Bella's life was the worst he'd ever seen caused by a person and was definitely consistent with child abuse.
Bella died in October 2017. In January of 2018 police said they were investigating her death as a homicide.
Lake was the boyfriend of Bella's mother.
When 11 News asked why it took three more months before an arrest was made, police said sometimes they may think they know who did it, but it can take a long time to get a break in the case that leads to an arrest. That can be especially true in cases involving crimes against children.
Lake was sentenced to life in prison with no parole.
