COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A man accused of killing a three-year-old girl in Colorado Springs pleaded not guilty on Thursday.
David Lake was arrested in late April, more than six months after the little girl was found unresponsive at a southeast Springs home. Police say Bella died from blunt-force trauma.
The man accused in her murder reportedly told a friend that she hit her head, and then a kid at her school pushed her into a bench a few days later. But according to the arrest affidavit, a doctor said the injury that ended Bella's life was the worst he'd ever seen caused by a person and was definitely consistent with child abuse.
Bella died in October 2017. In January of 2018 police said they were investigating her death as a homicide.
When 11 News asked why it took three more months before an arrest was made, police said sometimes they may think they know who did it, but it can take a long time to get a break in the case that leads to an arrest. That can be especially true in cases involving crimes against children.
Lake currently remains in jail, where he is being held without bond. A jury trial is slated for May 6.
