Local martial arts studio offers free self-defense class after recent attacks in Colorado Springs parks

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Calvary Family Martial Arts and Fitness is offering a free self-defense class Tuesday evening for people to learn how to protect themselves against potential attackers.

CFMAF owner Isaac Costley said he wanted to offer the free class after hearing about two recent attacks at local parks.

According to police, a man attacked a woman at Bear Creek Park the morning of June 27. It happened around 7 a.m. Officers said the woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Police are still looking for the suspect.

Officers said there was another attack at Monument Valley Park the morning of July 5. According to police, a man sexually assaulted a 68-year-old woman around 7:30 a.m. Officers are still looking for that suspect, as well.

“We want to give them something to help them so they'll be prepared for the real world,” Costley said. "We're going to go over two types of attacks. One is expected attack and the other is the unexpected attack and teach you how you can be the victor in both scenarios."

Costley is offering a free self-defense class Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Participants will learn what to do if they’re grabbed, hit in the face and thrown on the ground.

“We want to go ahead and give people the techniques, the concepts and the repetition so they can go home being the victor instead of the victim,” Costley said.
