Police are investigating after an illegal pet lemur bit a 2-year-old girl in downtown Nederland.

The Daily Camera reports that the girl was not seriously injured when she was bitten Wednesday at the Carousel of Happiness, but police are looking for the exotic pet's owner.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife area manager Larry Rogstad says the agency is aware of the Nederland lemur and that its owner had been told it was illegal.

Lemurs are primates native to the island of Madagascar. It's not legal to keep primates as pets in Colorado, and lemurs also are a protected species.
