Firefighters made a grisly discovery while battling a RV fire Saturday night.

"As [firefighters] were going through the interior of the vehicle, they found a body inside," said CSPD Lt. Howard Black.

It's unclear if he was already dead when the fire started, or if he died in the fire.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department received 911 calls shortly before 7:30 p.m. that something was burning just southeast of downtown. The motorhome was already engulfed in flames when firefighters got the 800 block of Santa Fe Street.

"I just walked out ... and I seen [the fire] and I was like, 'Oh man,' and I called my buddy next door ... and was like, 'Oh man, fire going, we might want to call the ambulance or something,' so we did," said neighbor Aaron Davis.

"It scared the [expletive] out of me," he added. "I was hoping nobody was in it -- that was my first reaction, that we've got to call the cops or something."

Neighbors say they believe the victim is the man who has been living in the motor home for several months, parked along the curb on Santa Fe Street. Homicide investigators are waiting on a search warrant to enter the motorhome and recover the man's body.

The Colorado Springs Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the discovery of a body inside of a burning R.V. Saturday night.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the 800 block of Santa Fe Street just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday for reports of a vehicle fire.

Police are asking that if you have any information about the fire or witnessed anything, to please call the Colorado Springs Police Department at 444-7000; or if you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP (7867).
