A small fire on the Air Force Academy is under control after causing a lot of smoke Tuesday afternoon.

The fire sparked just after 1 p.m. Tuesday and was visible from I-25. Multiple crews including firefighters from the academy and Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District responded to the blaze and were able to keep it from spreading.

The fire reportedly burned near the north gate entrance close to the Santa Fe Trail.

Firefighters had the fire under control Tuesday but remained on scene overnight to monitor it.

Meteorologist Lucy Bergemann says the wind speed on the installation around the time the fire started was 8 mph.
