PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - Two escaped prisoners made it across county lines before they were captured by deputies early Monday afternoon.

Guillermo Montano, 39, and Jonathan Gomez, 22, were reported missing from the Federal Prison Camp near Florence Sunday night. They were spotted the next day by a Union Pacific Railroad employee, who saw the men walking along the train tracks near Carslile Road and Hobson Road in western Pueblo County.

Pueblo County deputies and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers responded to the area, which was described as rugged. The sheriff's office says trains were stopped by while deputies used four-wheel-drive vehicles to drive along -- and later when the terrain grew too rough, on -- the tracks.

The men were eventually spotted sitting next to the tracks about 2 miles west of Swallows Road. They were taken into custody 10 minutes after noon and returned to Federal Bureau of Prison officials.

“This was great work by our deputies in quickly apprehending these two escapees before they could reach a populated area,” said Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor in a statement Monday. “We also want to thank Union Pacific railroad for their cooperation in this incident.”

Canon City police say the men were serving time for drug charges.
