Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran, was killed while responding to a mass shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California. CBS News reports he was among the first officers to respond. 11 others were killed by the gunman who also died.
CBS LA reports that minutes after the shooting started, Helus was the first to enter the bar. He was shot multiple times. A California Patrol Officer who was with Helus retreated, secured the perimeter and then pulled the injured deputy out of the line of fire. Helus died around 2 a.m. at a hospital.
Helus leaves behind a wife and son. He reportedly called his wife just before going into the building. He was looking to retire next year.
