DON'T PUT THAT IN THE TRASH! El Paso County is collecting hazardous waste

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - The wildly popular "Clean Sweep Household Hazardous Waste" event is back this Saturday!

There are a ton of items that should never be thrown away in your trash at home. The quadannual Clean Sweep event is intended to make sure you don't dispose of certain trash the wrong way!

Saturday's event runs from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the El Paso County Household Hazardous Waste Facility on 3255 Akers Drive on the east side of Colorado Springs. While it's free and open to all El Paso and Teller County residents, registration is required, and like the first event of the year in April, Saturday's Clean Sweep is full.

If you are registered for Saturday's event, here's what you need to know:

Where to go

All traffic will be directed to drive north on Akers Drive from Constitution to the El Paso County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Expect traffic: Our crew reported long lines right at 8 a.m.

What items are accepted

Electronics: ANY SIZE TV or COMPUTER MONITOR, limited to three total per vehicle. Computers, printers, fax machines, laptops, notebooks, ultra-books, netbooks, electronic tablets, DVD players, VCRs, radios, stereos, video game consoles, video display devices with viewing screens greater than 4” diagonally.

Paint and paint-related products (stains, strippers, thinners, varnishes, etc.)

Household chemicals (aerosols, ammonia, bleach, cleaners, lamp oil, etc.)

Lawn & garden chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, poisons, plant food, etc.)

Automotive chemicals (motor oil, antifreeze, brake & transmission fluids, waxes, bug/tar/vinyl/chrome/engine cleaners, etc.)

All types of batteries – lead-acid vehicle batteries and all types of household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, watch & hearing aid batteries)

Tires passenger and light truck (limit is nine {9} per vehicle).

Mattresses and box springs (limit four {4} total pieces per household).

What's not accepted
Business waste, containers larger than 5-gallon, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, lab-grade chemicals, medicines, trash or recyclables, and unlabeled or leaking containers.

When are the next events

There is a Clean Sweep event on Aug. 10, which is already full.
