The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a tool manufacturer site Friday morning.
The fire happened at Western Forge, located at 4617 Forge Road near Garden of the Gods Road and I-25. According to the company's website, it says it's the largest manufacturer of screwdrivers in the U.S.
Firefighters say because it flared up inside specialized equipment, known as a hopper, water could not be used to fight the flames. Instead, they had to use dry chemicals to put it out because water would have reacted with the fire. The hopper is a container that collects loose bulk material. In this case, it collected certain types of metal and shavings.
There were no injuries reported and there was no damage to the building itself, just the hopper outside the building. The cause is under investigation.
