FORT GARLAND, Colo. (KKTV) - A Costilla County sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was shot multiple times Wednesday morning.
Deputy Keith Schultz was responding to a burglary call in the Sangre de Cristo Ranches neighborhood around 4 a.m. when he was confronted by the homeowner. The sheriff's office says both men traded gunfire and Schultz was hit.
Schultz was able to get to his patrol vehicle and drive himself to a safe location to meet first responders. He was transported to a regional hospital and has since been released.
Following an hours-long manhunt, the suspect was arrested by Alamosa's SWAT team. He has been identified as Jackie Wampler Jr. Wampler is facing a long list of charges: first-degree murder, illegal possession of a firearm by a previous offender, felony menacing, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
