Company hopes to help with hot car rescues

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - We all know how infuriating it can be to see a pet left in a car on a hot day.

Starting on Aug. 9, in Colorado, if you see a child, at-risk person or a pet in a hot car and can't find the owner, you can break in without any legal ramifications.

One company is trying to make it even easier to save a life.

Mobile Glass has a nationwide network of auto glass professionals. They are offering to cover the cost of replacing a window if you need to smash one to rescue someone left inside. No strings attached.

Many pet owners are passionate about the issue.

"I'm very much an advocate for animals, and I will bust out your window ... I'm really thrilled that somebody is willing to back that up and say, 'Hey, these animals need to be taken better care of,'" said Beth Cole, a certified vet tech.

"I get really upset and call the cops a lot of the time. I'm very assertive about the whole thing. I think it's completely irresponsible," said Laura Premo, a pet owner.

Even in the shade, temperatures can get very hot inside a car. 11 News put a thermometer inside a car around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while it was cloudy outside; 20 minutes later the temperature had risen to 110 degrees.

Mobile Glass has an office here in Colorado Springs and its owner, Norman Newsome, wanted to encourage people to save a life when breaking the car window was the last resort.

"He wanted create something like this to be able to help good Samaritans with being able to be a hero and save a life but not have to accrue the charges of breaking somebody's window and then worrying about calling the police and, 'OK, the windows are locked, the doors are locked, what do I do?'" said Mobile Glass spokesperson Abby Martinez.

The company will completely cover the cost to replace a window if you find yourself needing to break it to rescue someone inside.

"We're trying to make everybody aware that, this is your safe zone, so you know that you can go ahead and break the window -- there's no strings attached. You can contact us and we can go ahead and take care of that," Martinez said.

People who are concerned about someone left in a hot car should always try to find the owner of the car before damaging it. The only requirements to use Mobile Glass' service is to have a police report or sufficient video of the incident.

Again, the new law that clears you of any legal charges for breaking the window does not take effect until August.
