UPDATE: Driver facing vehicular homicide, DUI charges identified

Colorado Springs police investigate a deadly crash that happened on Maizeland Road near North Academy Boulevard on Wednesday, April 3.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Springs police said officers were investigating a deadly crash that happened Wednesday morning as a vehicular homicide.

Police said the crash happened a little after 5 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Maizeland Road and Wold Avenue, just east of North Academy Boulevard.

Officers said their initial investigation shows that a woman, identified as 30-year-old Vanessa Gonzales, was under the influence and speeding down Maizeland.

Police said 41-year-old William Harrington was trying to turn left onto Maizeland when Gonzales' SUV t-boned his Cadillac in the intersection.

Police said firefighters had to cut Harrington out of his car, and he later died at a hospital.

Officers said Gonzales is facing vehicular homicide and DUI charges.

Maizeland Road was closed in both directions from Academy Place to Dunbarton Lane, according to officials. Drivers were advised to use Constitution Avenue as an alternate route.

Police said this is the 11th traffic death so far this year. At this time last year, officers said there were nine traffic deaths.
