Call for Action Investigation: Hospital employee accused of stealing drugs
We have an update about a hospital employee accused of stealing drugs from Memorial Central. We were the first to uncover Bret Richter's arrest.
A hearing was scheduled for today, but Richter wasn't in the courtroom. We have learned that Richter is in a drug treatment facility now.
His next court date is in June. We'll let you know what happens.
We are learning new information about a hospital employee who was arrested for allegedly stealing drugs. 11 News was the first to uncover this story. Our 11 Call for Action team has obtained the court papers for Bret Richter.
Colorado Springs Police said 30 year-old Bret Richter is facing third degree burglary and possession of a controlled substance.
11 Call for Action obtained an affidavit that says he worked as a tech at Memorial Central. Court papers said Richter used his ID badge to access rooms in the hospital, over the course of a few days last month.
Detectives asked Richter if he took 28 vials of Fentanyl from the hospital, and court papers say he responded 'that sounds right.'
Richter reportedly told police he had surgery years ago and became addicted. His lawyer told us they don't have a comment right now.
UCHealth told us Richter no longer works at the hospital, but they provided him support. They would not talk about the case specifically, but they said the hospital has a comprehensive monitoring system in place.
UCHealth said they were one of the first in the country to implement random drug testing for all employees who have access to medications.
The hospital also plans to launch a campaign about opiods for the staff, in response to the nationwide opiod crisis.
UCHealth told us they reviewed records and found no evidence that any patients were impacted.

Our 11 Call for Action team has uncovered that 30 year-old Bret Richter is facing third degree burglary and possession of a controlled substance, according to Colorado Springs Police. Police said he was arrested last week.
We reached out to UCHealth and they said in a statement "In March 2019, Memorial Hospital’s medication security and control measures identified that an employee was potentially mishandling and diverting medications. We quickly investigated, suspended and provided appropriate support for that employee."
Pelton went to Bret's home to get his side of the story, but he did not want to talk to us. We also reached out to Bret's lawyer and he told us they do not have a comment at this time.
Memorial Hospital told 11 Call for Action that Bret no longer works there. Hospital officials also said after reviewing their records they found no evidence that any patients were impacted.
The state health department told us they are reviewing the report and investigating. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies and the Drug Enforcement Agency are also investigating.
The suspect will be back in court next week. We'll let you know what happens.
