It made for an eerie sight Thursday night: smoke drifting out of the sewer as a fire burned below ground.
The fire department said a large pile of debris caught fire under the street. Even after getting the fire out, residual smoke continued to waft out of the sewer.
"Not out here, not coming from the sewers!" said passerby Andrew Lemson when asked about the strange scene.
The fire started around 8 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Fillmore Street and Nevada Avenue. The cause is not known.
