COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A new twist on an old scam: scammers are posing as utility workers, trying to get their hands on your Social Security number.
Here's how it works: Scammers will call a prospective victim and tell him or her they're with Colorado Springs Utilities. They'll then ask the would-be victim for the last four digits of their Social Security number. The phone number that shows up on the caller ID looks very close to the real Colorado Springs Utilities number.
This is a scam! Springs Utilities says they will never request your Social Security number on an outgoing phone call. They will only request the number to set up new customers who call them.
If you think you may have fallen victim to the scam, check your credit card, phone and cable statements for unfamiliar charges. You can also call Springs Utilities at 448-4800 to verify if the call.
