Springs police are imploring the public to curtail dangerous behavior on the roadway, as five months into 2019 the city is keeping pace with the deadliest year on record for crashes.

11 News spoke with the police department Wednesday after a video of a man hanging out of the window of a fast-moving car was brought to our newsroom's attention.

The couple who took the video near Airport and Chelton says the driver was speeding through neighborhoods and fighting with the man. In the video, which can be viewed at the bottom of this article, you can see his legs sticking out of the car.

Police would not comment on the specific video because it was not reported to them, but they say to call 911 if you see someone driving dangerously on the roads. Don't try to follow or intervene, just call.

"If you see something dangerous, you see someone acting, be it traffic or other behavior that's a danger to themselves or a danger to the public, give us a call and we'll do our best to get out there and deal with the situation,” said CSPD Lt. James Sokolik.

Finally, at a stoplight, the man hops out of the window and walks away. He appears to be OK.

The people who took the video told us they did not call police in the end because the man who was in danger was not hurt. But Sokolik urges the public to call anyway if they do see that sort of behavior.

"If you see somebody driving recklessly, someone who might be a DUI, we’re going to ask you to call."

Police Chief Vince Niski is making traffic safety one of his top priorities as the new leader of the Colorado Springs Police Department. 2018 was the deadliest traffic year on record in the city.
