MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Recovery efforts are underway to bring a body down from Pikes Peak's Barr Trail.
Hikers spotted the body early Sunday afternoon from the "16 Golden Stairs" portion of the nearly 13-mile trail. Jacqueline Kirby, a spokesperson with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, could not confirm the exact location of the body, only that it was in a "very treacherous" spot that would take search and rescue crews hours to access. A team began the trek early Monday morning.
From the hikers' vantage point, it appeared to be the body of a woman.
The "16 Golden Stairs" refers to a set of short switchbacks along the final half-mile of the Barr Trail. While extremely hikeable, it's also a very steep stretch of the trail.
Foul play is not suspected.
