Crews battle apartment fire in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Crews battled a large apartment fire Monday evening in Colorado Springs.

Smoke could be seen for miles after the fire flared up around 5:30 p.m. The complex, Lionstone Apartments, are in the 200 block of Lionstone Drive near E. Platte Avenue and N. Murray Boulevard.

Roads were closed in the area as crews worked to put out the flames.

There were 14 units deemed unlivable, with a total of 41 people displaced, three of which were younger than 18.

Fire officials say three people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries including smoke inhalation and thermal burns.

11 News confirmed at least one GoFundMe page for a resident. The sister of Cory said he is stationed at Fort Carson and has been deployed several times. She said he went back into the building to save his dogs and has a few burns on his back, but he's expected to be OK, left with only the clothes he was wearing. A fire official confirmed with 11 News at least three pets died in the fire including one dog and two hamsters.

The cause remains under investigation.
