Police search for theft suspect off Baptist near Monument
Police are searching for a shoplifting suspect who ran away from officers.
You may have noticed the large police presence near I-25 and Baptist Road in Monument Wednesday afternoon.
Police said they received a report about a shoplifting case at the Home Depot off Jackson Creek Parkway.
“The two suspects involved had already left the scene but officers found the vehicle here at the Fairfield Inn," said Monument Police Commander Steve Burk.
Officers told 11 News when they tried to pull over the suspect's vehicle, the passenger ran off.
"The driver did stop and cooperate with the officer, but the passenger got out and ran," said Commander Burk. “While officers were here on scene dealing with one person they had in custody, they saw someone walking through the field across the street. Didn’t know if it was the suspect we were looking for, but they also weren’t able to see him leave the field. So that’s why we just set up a perimeter and searched the field.”
More than a dozen officers and troopers canvassed a nearby field but they could not find the other theft suspect. We asked police about the large response.
“Any time an officer calls out on the radio that somebody’s running from them on a traffic stop, it definitely peaks your interest and makes you concerned for that officer’s welfare," said Commander Burk.
The driver was arrested for theft charges and for having a counterfeit bill. Police told us the passenger could face theft and obstruction charges. Their names have not been released. We'll keep you updated.
