WESTMINSTER, Colo. (KKTV) - Authorities have identified the two women killed after a fire swept through a Denver-area apartment complex Sunday morning.
The fire broke out at the Westbury Apartments in Westminster around 2:15 Sunday morning and quickly engulfed the building, forcing people to jump out of second and third-story windows to escape. The 69-unit building was gutted by the flames and beyond repair. It took firefighters four hours to get the inferno under control.
Leah Hamel, 41, and Margaret Kelly, 58, both died in the blaze. Sister station KCNC reported one of the women was among the 10 people rushed to the hospital, while the other woman was found in the building hours later.
In the days since the fire, investigators have learned there were no sprinklers in the building, which was built in the 70s at a time when they weren't required.
