A 6-year-old girl has died from her injuries after she reportedly crashed into a van in the Banning Lewis Ranch neighborhood Thursday evening.

The incident happened at Cottonwood Tree Drive and Silver Birch Drive just before 6:30 p.m.

Police say the child, later identified as Charlee Cabapingan, was transported to a Denver hospital by a helicopter in an attempt to save her life.

The Major Accident Unit responded and resumed the investigation. Early into the investigation, they say it appears Cabapingan was quickly riding her bicycle when she hit a Ford van as the driver was taking a left.

Sgt. Richard DuVall with Colorado Springs police says he is, "Encouraging parents to stress safety in teaching their children safety rules when they’re out of bicycles, when riding around traffic, and for drivers to be very cautious when they are driving in areas with children."

Neither speed nor alcohol or drugs are considered factors in this case.

Police say no charges have been filed. This is the 29th traffic-related death in Colorado Springs this year. Last year at this time, there were 21.
