COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -- A woman got a call from scammers posing as a delivery company asking her for personal information. She wants to share her story so you don't fall for the same scam.
"It's sort of frightening," said Margaret. She got a call from FedEx about a package delivery. "They asked me if I was Margaret and I said, 'Yes' and they said, 'I have a package for you and we need to have this address.' They gave me my previous address and I knew it wasn't true."
She was expecting a package, but she knew something was off. "I was thinking about it, Federal Express - since I was expecting it - had my current address. So I knew something that was wrong," she said.
The scammer asked her for personal information. "I just hung up after he said, 'Well I must have the wrong number.'"
Little did the scammers know they were talking to one of our former 11 Call for Action volunteers. So Margaret knew just what to do. "I called Federal Express… and they said, 'Oh we don't call and we have no package for you.' I said, 'Okay.'"
"So I thought, 'Well let me check with KKTV' because I used to volunteer at Call for Action and I thought, you know, we need to stop this kind of stuff," she added.
The con artists continue to change their scheme, but they're always after the same thing: your money or your personal information. FedEx warns about this type of thing on their website saying to watch for requests for personal and financial information. Click here for more information.
"I'm just tired of this scamming and I just hope I can do something to help prevent it," Margaret added.
In this case, the first red flag to watch for is whether you are expecting a package or not. Keep in mind, scammers can spoof their phone number to make it look like they're calling from anywhere. If you get this call, hang up. Call the legitimate company using a trusted phone number to see if anyone is trying to get a hold of you.
