COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Three people have been arrested in connection with a gift card theft scheme.
Jeffrey Dalton, 40; Cydney Faith, 32; and Krystal Kaderli, 28, were taken into custody at a Days Inn in Colorado Springs early Tuesday morning.
Police say they were led to the trio after locating a stolen car at a Kum & Go about a mile away on Chestnut Street. An officer, who was familiar with the gift card scam, reported finding evidence of the scam inside the vehicle.
"In an effort to apprehend the suspect identified of stealing the vehicle, Officer Zamora contacted the occupants of a third-floor motel room at the Days Inn, 4610 Rusina Road. Officer Zamora contacted three individuals in the motel room and observed more evidence of the same gift card scheme he had recently learned about," police said in a writeup about the case.
The scam involves swapping the bar code from an activated gift card with the bar code on a stolen one, then putting the altered gift cards back on store shelves. From there, the unsuspecting cashier will load what they think is a new gift card with money -- only for those funds to go instead to the suspects' gift card.
"Gift card recipients attempt to use the gift card only to learn it is not funded," police said.
Dalton, Faith, and Kaderli face charges of unlawful manufacture of a financial transaction device, as well as drug charges.
