Drinking and driving suspected in Highway 85 crash that killed 2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Two people are dead after a crash in Security-Widefield Sunday afternoon.

The deadly collision happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. along Highway 85 just south of Main Street. Troopers say the driver of a southbound Chevy Impala tried to pass another car and lost control. Her Impala spun and crossed the center median into the northbound lanes, striking the driver's side of a VW Jetta. The Jetta was shoved backward off the road while the Impala flipped once, landing on its roof.

The driver of the Impala, 35-year-old Amanda Sandoval of Fountain, died at the scene. A passenger in the Jetta died a short time later after arriving at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. Troopers say neither person was wearing a seat belt. The passenger will not be identified until family is notified.

State Patrol said alcohol and speeding are both considered factors in the crash, but stressed the investigation was still ongoing.
