11 Call For Action Alert: Beware scammers posing as phony police charities

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - For so many, the impulse immediate: tragedy befalls our community, and you want to help.

Unfortunately, crooks are out there, eager to prey on your good intentions.

Our 11 Call For Action team says they have seen an uptick in scam calls since the start of the year asking for donations to fake police charities.

This coincides with the loss of three Colorado deputies in the line of duty in the span of just five weeks, including El Paso County Deputy Micah Flick. Triple tragedy has brought scammers out of the woodwork to try and take your money during this tough time.

One would-be victim told 11 News he received a call from someone asking for money. That's a big red flag: the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and Colorado Springs Police Department are not cold calling people asking for donations. If you get a scam call, just hang up.

But don't let criminals deter you from helping. If you wish to donate to Flick's family, information on verified ways to do so can be found here and here.
