The pilot of a plane has died after his plane crashed into a neighborhood in Douglas County.

Emergency vehicles rushed to the Stepping Stone Neighborhood on Friday night for reports of the crash.

The airplane was a Cirrus SR22, single-engine propeller aircraft. Debris struck a house in the neighborhood around 8:30 p.m. behind 11083 Pastel Pt.

It was a high-speed impact crash, South Metro Fire Rescue said. Crews quickly performed a recovery grid search.

On Saturday afternoon, the pilot who died was identified as 67-year-old Robert D. Marquis from Glade Park, which is west of Grand Junction. He was the only person in the plane.

The plane departed from Centennial Airport. It is unclear whether the plane crashed on takeoff or landing.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
