Ranked 18th in the nation, Discovery Canyon boys volleyball aims for another state title
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - At first, the Thunder didn’t really know how good they would be, but once they got into their schedule, week after week, it was Discovery Canyon on top.
However, undefeated doesn’t say enough to describe their season last year. The Thunder went all the way to the 5A state championship without losing a single set. Then, they won the state title in a sweep as well.
A perfect ending to a perfect season, but eight seniors would graduate at the end of it, meaning guys like captain and setter Tyler Sack would need to step up to continue the legacy of the defending state champs.
“Obviously we have a target on our back,” Sack said. “Every team wants to beat us.”
But the Thunder didn’t miss a beat to start their second spring season. So far, they’ve faced five power-house teams, and they’re off to another 5-0 start.
However, this past weekend, the Thunder experienced a first: although they got the win, they did drop set #1 to Cherokee Trail. Head coach Wayne Weatherby said that actually made him feel better about this team.
“Now we know we can fight and come back and work hard when we need to,” Weatherby said.
Coach Weatherby is in his 32nd season coaching volleyball. His mantra is focus, but play relaxed.
“We joke around a lot and practices are so fun but there is that seriousness,” Weatherby said.
And when the coach was asked about what will carry the team back to the championship?
“Our passion, honestly.”
