Pueblo, Colo. (KKTV) - Today Pueblo D60 broke ground on the brand new Sunset Elementary School on the city’s south side. This is the second new elementary school the district has started constructing this week.

Franklin School of Innovation (formerly Franklin Elementary) broke ground on Tuesday.

Both schools were holding classes in buildings that were over 50 years old. The new schools will be built on their existing campuses.

The principles of both schools each told me they were excited to leave behind the leaky roofs and electrical issues of their current buildings. They added that they are both looking forward to the improved ventilation and technological capabilities of the new schools.

These latest groundbreakings are part of a larger plan the district has for Pueblo. They plan to construct five new schools by the Fall of 2023.

D60 says they want to “reshape the community’ and “put Pueblo back to work” by constructing these new schools.

Construction has already started at the new East and Centennial high schools. The fifth school in the district’s plan is a k-8 school which has not yet been named.

Students, staff, and alumni came together to celebrate both groundbreakings this week, which had to be held indoors due to the cold weather. Students and alumni sung the school’s fight song together at the Franklin School of Innovation’s groundbreaking to celebrate the start of a new chapter in the school’s history.
