LAS VEGAS (KKTV) - A mother accused in the death of her 7-year-old son has reportedly confessed to killing him and dumping his body off a Nevada highway.

Samantha Moreno Rodriguez admitted to strangling son Liam and leaving his naked body off State Route 160, a prosecutor told the court Wednesday.

Moreno Rodriguez was making her first appearance in a Las Vegas courtroom following her extradition from Colorado. She was arrested in Denver June 8, just over a week after hikers found a child’s remains off a dirt road in Clark County, Nevada.

Moreno Rodriguez reportedly left her home in San Jose, California on May 24 with her son Liam in tow, leaving Liam’s father a note that she was sorry she had to “do it like this” and that she was going to try to find herself and Liam a home.

But police say Moreno Rodriguez killed her son in Nevada and continued on to Colorado, leaving his body behind.

“There’s every indication that when she left San Jose that she was intending on starting a new life,” Las Vegas Metro Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer told CBS Las Vegas.

Moreno Rodriguez remained under the radar at first as police in Nevada tried to learn the identity of the deceased child. A composite sketch was released of the little boy, called John “Little Zion” Doe in the media, but a break in the case wouldn’t come until days later, when on June 4 a family friend in California contacted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and said they knew who Little Zion was.

On June 7, police announced the remains were those of Liam Husted and his mother was suspected of killing him. Moreno Rodriguez was arrested the following day.

Moreno Rodriguez agreed June 17 not to fight extradition from Colorado to Nevada.

She was booked into the Clark County Detention Center Tuesday.
