COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Springs Fire Department is currently on scene of a basement fire near East Woodmen Road and Austin Bluffs Parkway. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly.

Firefighters say the fire started in the basement of the home and there is heavy smoke damage. Crews say three people will be displaced because of the fire.

CSFD says a dog, turtle, and guinea pig were inside the home at the time of the fire, and the guinea pig did not make it out alive. No people were reportedly injured in the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

The homeowner met the fire department outside the home.

Captain Mike Smaldino from the Colorado Springs Fire Department has on message for homeowners as we have been seeing more house fires in Colorado Springs and the weather starts to heat up. “We’ve just had a lot in the last few days as it’s gotten hot, summertime, maybe people being home a little more, so obviously, we want to push the safety message.
