Throwing out your Christmas tree? Some local goats would love it
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - It’s officially the new year which means it’s time for some people to start taking down their Christmas decorations--and figuring out what they are going to do with their Christmas trees.
Now we’re sharing with you a way you can get rid of yours and help out some animals in the process.
If you had a real tree, instead of just throwing it out, consider donating it to a local farm like Screaming Goat Acres in Colorado Springs. The days following Christmas are like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the animals.
“That’ll be down to the bones in a day,” the farm’s co-owner James Torbit said as he put a tree out for the goats at the farm.
Goats and chickens at the farm would love to munch on your old Christmas tree and its good for them too.
“We found out that the pine trees, the ponderosas, and the doug firs, which we predominantly have, have a lot of Vitamin C in it, trace minerals, which they need. And it’s a really good de-wormer,” he added.
The farm is owned by the Torbit family who moved to Colorado Springs a few years back from LA. They say this is just a small part of why they love their sustainable life so much.
“There’s a lot of our environment that we’ve kind of lost and it’s more of a getting back to nature and, you get, what’s a commodity, a tree, you bring it home, you decorate it. And then it’s trash, but is it really trash? You know, it could be, you know, that whole one man’s trash is another person’s treasure, or animal’s food.”
If you want to donate your tree to a local farm like Screaming Goat acres--just make sure there’s no ornament hooks or tinsel.
