26 Chihuahuas rescued from Colorado Springs apartment

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Twenty-six Chihuahuas were rescued from a Colorado Springs apartment after they were discovered during an eviction situation Wednesday.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region says 30 dogs were found living in crates in a garage.

“Having 30 dogs in one residence is not only bad for the animals and humans involved, but also against the law in Colorado Springs, where the owner was living. After speaking with officers about his options, their owner surrendered 26 of his dogs to HSPPR," the humane society said in a news release about the incident.

The owner was allowed to keep four dogs, which is in compliance with the legal number of dogs allowed.

Despite the sheer number of dogs and the questionable living conditions, most of the dogs appeared medically healthy.

“A few will need dental surgeries. Some are fearful and will need some time in our behavior modification program. And all of them will need to be spayed or neutered through our veterinary clinic,” HSPPR said.

Some of the dogs will be available for adoption as soon as next week.
