BRIARGATE - Viral Upper Respiratory Illness (Flu-Like)

Dr. Michael Halenkamp with Colorado Springs Health Partners says there has been a nasty viral upper respiratory tract illness (URI) making the rounds.

The illness mimics the flu in a lot of ways. But so far, flu tests have been negative.

Symptoms include runny nose, congestion, significant cough and pulmonary complaints.

Vomiting is also present in most cases.

The illness is affecting asthma patients quite hard, who aren't on preventative medications.

Ask your doctor about treatment.

East Colorado Springs - RSV (babies)

Dr. Alan Garscadden with CSHP reports an increase in RSV, or wheezing in babies.

There may also be a cough and fever.

RSV lasts anywhere from 7 to 21 days.

Sometimes, inhaled or oral asthma-type medicine may help your child breathe easier.

Severe cases may require hospitalization.

RSV is such a common virus, it's almost impossible to keep your child from being exposed to it.

One thing you can do is make sure people who are in contact with your baby wash their hands first, before holding your child.
