Trees were thinned in Black Forest today as part of the activities.
Communities across Colorado hit the outdoors Saturday to take measures to prepare for this year's wildfire season.
From Black Forest to Durango, a variety of events were held, designed to bring neighbors together to reduce the risks of future wildfires. It was all part of the inaugural Wildfire Preparedness Day of Service. Colorado was chosen to pilot the event before it goes nationwide next year.
Several projects were conducted in the Pikes Peak region. In Black Forest, volunteers worked to thin areas of dense vegetation prone to fueling wildfire. In Colorado Springs, volunteers helped fill 900 sandbags for future distribution as part of the local Red Cross' effort to get more sandbags to communities at higher risk of flooding post-Waldo Canyon Fire.
Up the pass in Woodland Park, residents attended a workshop on fire mitigation. The workshop was held at NETCO Fire Station 1; residents were then encouraged to go home and put what they learned into practice.
Elsewhere in the state, cities held neighborhood walkthroughs to identify areas in need of better mitigation, chipped downed trees, cleared and hauled brush, and several other measures geared towards preventing a wildfire season like the one Coloradans suffered in 2012.
