Researchers: Tornado Alley Should Be Expanded

According to a report, tornadoes are striking in more parts of the U.S. more often.

The traditional boundaries of Tornado Alley center in the plains states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota. But only one state in the traditional Tornado Alley--Kansas--was among the top five states for the most tornadoes from 1980-2009.

Researchers now believe Tornado Alley should be expanded to include most of the Midwest and Deep South.

Tornadoes and storms that generate them account for 57 percent of insured catastrophic losses in the U.S. each year.
