Strong wind gusts caused trees to come crashing down in Canon City late Sunday night.
One tree crashed through the roof of a house. The tree appeared to have split into two pieces, both crashing on different sections of the home. The limbs created a huge hole in the roof of the home, causing serious damage. The extent of the damage is not known.
Reportedly that tree even pulled up a gas line forcing an evacuation of the block. Neighbors tell 11 News that the homeowners made it out safely.
In a nearby neighborhood several other trees were uprooted. Some landed on homes causing damage, others crashed into yards and streets.
Winds roared over 70 mph overnight, and Monday city crews and homeowners were left cleaning up the mess.
“"Kind of felt like I was in a battlefield, because you are stepping over limbs and the tree itself was down. There is definitely no way to just pick it up and move it. We are having to cut it into sections,” said homeowner John Freyta.
Freyta’s 70 foot tree barely missed his house and crash-landed in front of his house, and blocked off the street. He spent all morning Monday cleaning up the branches, and sawing the big tree into pieces to be hauled away.
There were reports of damage all over Canon City including downed trees limbs and branches. But there have been no reports of injuries.
