One southern Colorado family has some repairs to make to their home, although they are grateful no one was hurt by a tornado that hit the house broad-side Thursday afternoon.
In the aftermath the pieces started coming together.
“You see it on TV all the time to have it actually happen to you you’re just kind of in a fog,” said George Cusic.
One of two tornados touched down Thursday in the Peaceful Valley neighborhood east of the Fountain city limits. Cusic was in his house when the twister zeroed in and hit squarely near the front entrance.
“The window blew open, and it was just total chaos after that,” he said.
In the moments that followed, the swirling storm put two holes in the roof, twisted the garage door and tossed a family member’s camper into a nearby field.
“My dad’s been over there he says it’s scattered over about 5 acres,” said Rick Tucker, George’s brother-in-law.
The tornado also damaged George’s fence and the family trampoline. When the skies cleared, George was the only one in the neighborhood left with damage to clean up.
“They got a trailer that’s blown over and we have buckets that didn’t move,” said Aaron Smith, who lives next door.
The twister that caused those damages left nearly as quickly as it touched down.
“It was going down through there lickety-split. “It was pretty crazy,” Cusic said.
There were pieces to put back together, but the family is intact.
“Thank God everyone’s okay,” Cusic said. “The house can be repaired and fixed an inconvenience but it could have been a heckuva lot worse.”
