Even if the planned security protests don’t impact your holiday travel the day before Thanksgiving, severe weather across the country may cause flight delays.

The storm system that’s moving into the Colorado mountains Wednesday hit Utah late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a blizzard warning lasting into Wednesday morning. Heavy snow and strong winds caused whiteout conditions there, leading to nine flights were canceled out of Salt Lake City Tuesday night. Numerous schools, governments and businesses in Utah closed hours earlier than normal Tuesday because of the storm, with state traffic officials warning the evening commute could take four times longer than usual. Holiday travelers were warned earlier in the day to get out of town immediately or risk being stranded there.

The storm system has also caused a mess in Washington state, Oregon and Idaho. At least three deaths in Washington have been blamed on the storm. Two and a half inches of snow were reported at the Seattle airport Monday, breaking the previous record by an inch. Thanksgiving travel was dicey throughout the region, with many highways too dangerous to drive. In Seattle, icy roads kept airline crews from getting to the airport, and people who missed their flights because of the dangerous drive were trying to rebook on already crowded planes.

As the storm moves east, those in the Pacific Northwest may get a brief reprieve from snowy conditions in time to allow some travelers an opportunity to get their Thanksgiving destinations.
