Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in The Springs

Heavy rain showers caused street flooding across Colorado Springs Wednesday night.

Raging waters turned one street near Austin Bluffs and Academy into a river. It was too much for one vehicle, which was stranded in the middle of the road.

"This road has always been bad," said Robert Miller, who lives nearby. "I thought I'd check it out, make sure there was no one in it."

All over Colorado Springs, drivers tried to inch their way across flooded streets, even as water cascaded over the road.

Jonathan Cunningham lives in a mobile home near Airport and Powers that backs up to Sand Creek. He is keeping a close eye on rising water levels, and is worried his home might flood.

"It's scary," said Cunningham. "It's getting further and further up the river bank."

The Templeton Gap floodway is also running high. The fast moving water has flooded part of the low-lying embankment, and it will likely take some time for water levels to return to normal.

Most of the roads around town are expected to be fine for the Thursday morning commute.
